Microsoft to retire video curation service Stream (Classic)

Microsoft to retire video curation service Stream (Classic)

Microsoft is retiring Stream (Classic) and integrating its native video experiences with Microsoft 365 as Stream (on SharePoint).

The change timeline is tight. From May 15, 2023, users will not be able to upload videos to Stream (Classic) unless admins delay this change. And by February 15, 2025, all Stream (Classic) links and embed codes will no longer redirect to the migrated videos in OneDrive & SharePoint.

What you need to do

New M365 clients – if you’re a new M365 customer, you should use Stream (on SharePoint) to avoid the need to migrate your new videos.

Existing M365 clients – for organisations that use Stream (Classic) to record and store webinars, training videos and other important files, you should start your changeover plan now.

Developing a changeover plan

Before you migrate videos, we suggest familiarising yourself with Stream (on SharePoint) and how your users will use it. This step is essential, as there are critical differences between the two solutions. When you transition, your users must be aware of these differences.

See the official adoption strategies guide to help transition your users to Stream (on SharePoint).

How to migrate from Stream (Classic)?
You will see an informative header when you log in to Stream (Classic).

To delay the migration date:

  1. Click on the text that says, “Click here to modify”. This link will take you to Settings.
  2. In the Settings section, you can set the date to start saving new videos to Stream (on SharePoint) and stop saving them to Stream (Classic).

To start migrating your videos:

  1. Click on the text that says, “Migrate your videos now”. This link will take you to a walkthrough that guides you through the process.
  2. Read the documentation about the migration process.
  3. Launch the Migration tool.

To shut down Stream (Classic)

After migrating your content using the content migration tool, you can disable Stream (Classic) immediately or by setting a disable date. You can also display a message on Stream (Classic) directing users to Stream (on SharePoint).

For information, check out Microsoft’s official migration strategies guide.

Need help with this process?

First Focus is working to develop a short project to help our clients transition from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint). This project will cover the abovementioned steps, from developing a changeover plan to migration and embedding adoption in your workflows.

You do not have to use this service to migrate your videos – you can do it yourself, but we want you to know that you have the option.

To learn more, please get in touch with your Technical Account Manager (TAM) as soon as possible to investigate whether this solution fits your organisation.
